World Tour Days 62 – 63

Departing Namibia we crossed the South Africa border in the late morning. This was the last country for our overland truck journey, and we enjoyed a final snack stop. This first day in South Africa we made stops to look at the rooibos bushes, which only grow naturally there. We stayed at Marcuskraal, a citrus and rooibos farm. The farm is family owned and operated and has been for several generations. The owner made our overland truck a dinner using many locally sourced ingredients. They also made honey there from bees that pollinate the citrus plants.

We left Cederburg early the next morning to make it to our final destination on the truck, Cape Town. It was only a 5 hour drive south passing many rooibos farms, wheat farms, and seeing mountains in the distance. For lunch we stopped at a beach that had a beautiful view of Table Mountain and the ocean. There were people surfing and walking their dogs. Finally our truck made it to the last drop off point, a hotel downtown.

We started our world trip with a day in Chicago and a day in Qatar making our way to Nairobi. In Nairobi we had a few days on our own to explore and get ready for the overland trip. Nick and I got on the overland truck in Nairobi and spent the next 57 days and nights traveling down to Cape Town. The overland tour covered Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. We spent most nights camping in a canvas tent we set up and took down every night. There were a few nights every once in a while where we got spoiled and stayed in hotels, permanent tents (like glamping), and even a bungalow at a coffee plantation. 3 meals a day were prepared for us and we helped with set up and clean up.

The tour was split into many legs where some people would get off and new ones would get on. There were 6 of us who stayed the full 57 days. Making it to our final overland destination of Cape Town was bittersweet but we were excited for the next chapter of the world trip to commence.

After saying our final goodbyes we got our rental car and made our way to our close family friend’s house for the next section of our trip.
